On the homepage, OpenAI – the company behind ChatGPT has officially entered the search race with SearchGPT, an AI search engine with the ability to access real-time information on the Internet.

The Verge quoted OpenAI representative Kayla Wood as saying that this is currently only a test version based on the GPT-4 AI model and will initially only allow 10,000 users to try access.

OpenAI is still working with third-party partners and using live content feeds to build its search results. The ultimate goal of this project is to integrate search features directly into ChatGPT.

Similar to Google, SearchGPT has a large chat interface with the question of what users are looking for. However, instead of returning a mere list of links, SearchGPT will try to sort and understand them.

In an example from OpenAI, the search engine summarizes the events or music festivals, then presents a short description of the events and is followed by a link to the source page.

In another search, SearchGPT explains when to plant tomatoes before analyzing different varieties. Once the results appear, users can ask the next question or click on the link to open the required website.

With this AI-powered search engine, OpenAI will be the latest name to set ambitions to become a new era of search engines.

The Verge argues that the emergence of the father of ChatGPT in this field is a significant challenge for Google, the search giant that has been rushing to integrate AI features on its search engine due to concerns that users will flock to competing products that offer these tools first.
