When ChatGPT was launched, many people were surprised because Google was not the company that introduced the groundbreaking AI tool. The search giant owns the world leading AI lab DeepMind and has always spent a lot of money on artificial intelligence development. However, letting OpenAI overtake has become a major setback for Google.

Recently, at the Made by Google event that took place on August 13, the search giant made users pay attention to itself when it launched a Pixel phone with built-in AI, a smartwatch and a new headset. This is the company latest effort to better compete with competitors in the field of artificial intelligence.

A prominent feature introduced at the event is the “add me” feature. It allows users to add themselves to a random photo by taking another portrait photo and then stitching them together thanks to AI.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said he expects the feature to “capture the imagination of consumers,” and described the photo and video capabilities showcased at the Made by Google event as one of the most exciting improvements on the new Pixel phones.

However, Google still seems to be far behind rivals such as Apple and Samsung when it comes to smartphones. Pixel phone sales are only a fraction of the revenue that iPhones and Galaxy devices generate each year.

After Chief Equipment Officer Rick Osterloh took over Google product and services team, he and his colleagues worked hard to demonstrate the advantage that Gemini AI can bring to users through a series of useful features.

While Google is racing to innovate in the field of AI, it also faces a number of challenges and is uncertain about the future. In August, a federal judge in the United States ruled that Google has many monopolistic actions, which have consequences for competing companies.

According to Bloomberg, Google is considering a number of remedies and may involve splitting the company. In which, the most likely parts to be divested are Android and Chrome.

In addition to the court battle, the company has also struggled to convince investors. Currently, Google is spending a large amount of money each year on AI development but is not generating good profits.
