Samsung announced “huge” 61.44TB capacity SSD, started researching 122.88TB SSD

This SSD model was born to cater to data centers.

Samsung has quietly introduced the new BM1743 solid-state drive (SSD), designed for high-volume data reading storage applications in the center data. The BM1743 offers up to 61.44TB of capacity and relatively high performance thanks to the PCIe 4.0/5.0 x4 interface. In addition, Samsung also plans to develop hard drives up to 120TB using the same type of 3D V-NAND memory.

The highlight of the BM1743 is Samsung’s exclusive controller, which supports both PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 x4, and integrates 7th generation QLC V-NAND (3D NAND) memory. In terms of performance, the BM1743 achieves a sequential read speed of 7,200 MB/s and a sequential write speed of 2,000 MB/s. 1.6 million and 110,000 IOPS, which is good enough for BM1743’s read-intensive storage applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI) processing or content delivery.

Samsung’s 61.44TB hard drive is aimed at ultra-high-capacity, low-write-down data-reading storage applications. So, the BM1743’s write endurance is only 0.26 times the full hard drive write per day.

Samsung offers the BM1743 in two sizes: U.2 for servers using PCIe 4.0 x4 and E3 interfaces. S for PCIe 5.0 x4 interface. The PCIe Gen5 interface is not really necessary with the current performance of the BM1743, but Samsung aims for wide compatibility with theserver system.

The power consumption of the 61.44TB BM1743 has not yet been disclosed by Samsung, but it may be quite high. However, with storage density being the main advantage, power consumption may not be the most important factor.

According to Blocks & Files, Samsung’s BM1743 61.44TB hard drive has very few competitors on the market. Currently, only Solidigm (D5-P5336) and Western Digital (SN655) can offer 61.44TB of capacity with PCIe interface. Other high-performance high-capacity SSD developers such as Kioxia, Micron, and SK hynix have yet to introduce 60TB hard drives, so for the time being, Samsung joins two other companies are uniquely dominant in the market.
