GPT-5 will possess the intelligence of a PhD

GPT-5 could be launched in the second half of 2025 or early 2026, with the expectation of becoming a comprehensive upgrade over GPT-4.

The next big development of ChatGPT is being rumored a lot in recent times. On June 19, Ms. Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, gave some clearer information about GPT-5’s capabilities (tentative name).

In an interview with Dartmouth Engineering posted on social media X, Murati described the jump from GPT-4 to GPT-5 as like someone who has graduated from high school and is entering college.

“If you look at the level of improvement, systems like GPT-3 can be likened to toddler-level intelligence. At that time, GPT-4 was more like the intelligence of high school students. In the next few years, we will consider upgrading the system to the level of a Ph.D. degree. Things are changing and improving quite quickly,” Ms. Mira Murati said.

Interestingly, the interviewer asked Murati to specify the timing and question the possibility of GPT-5 appearing in 2025. OpenAI’s chief technology officer nodded and explained that the company needs about another 1.5 years.

If this becomes true, GPT-5 could be launched in late 2025 or early 2026. Some people will be disappointed to learn that OpenAI’s major upgrade will need some more time.

Initially, some rumors suggested that GPT-5 could appear by the end of 2023. However, this did not become a reality. After that, many believe that mid-2024 is the right time for OpenAI to launch the new system. After all, the company only released GPT-4o, a slightly upgraded version.

In addition, Murati acknowledged that OpenAI’s “doctorate-level” artificial intelligence system only applies to certain tasks. “These systems have reached the level of awareness of a specialist in specific tasks. Of course, it has not been able to handle some tasks that require advanced analytical capabilities,” she added.
