According to Search Engine Land, the infinite scrolling feature on Google Search has officially been “killed” on personal computer devices.
A Google spokesperson added that the infinite scroll feature will be removed from search results on computer devices. It is expected that this feature will also be removed on mobile devices soon.
Instead, on a computer, Google’s classic pagination bar will return for users to jump to a specific page of search results or simply click the Next button to see the next page. Meanwhile, on mobile devices, the Add Results button will show up at the bottom of the search results to load the next page.
The infinite scroll feature was first introduced on the mobile version of Google Search in October 2021. By the end of 2022, this feature was officially put on the desktop version of Google Search.
Google explained that the infinite scroll death is to allow search companies to speed up the delivery of results and have more searches, instead of automatically loading results that users have not explicitly requested.
In addition, the search giant also found that automatically loading more results did not bring a significant improvement in user satisfaction with Google Search.
In 2023, Google’s search-related ad revenue reached $175 billion. However, this core product has been judged to be significantly lagging behind.
Users have long complained, in addition to researchers who have recently discovered a decline in the quality of Google’s search results. The emergence of models like AI like ChatGPT has only made the situation worse.
